About The Institution of Engineers (India)

  • The IE (I) is the largest professional body in the World with almost 1, 03, 602 Corporate and 5, 15, 729 Non-corporate members spread over length and breadth of the country. With 101 State and local Centres and the Corporate Head Quarters at Kolkata, it caters to the engineering community in India and abroad in a very effective way. It was registered under India Companies Act 1913 in the Chennai on 13 September 1920. The Institution has gained special status in the world forums like the WEC, WFEO, CEC, FIP, IFAC, CIRP, WMC, and many other International bodies. The latest “feather in the cap” of IEI is its attainment of full membership of the Engineers Mobility Forum (EMF) on 17 June 2009. This status would enable IE (I) a level playing field in the international scenario, mobility and a vast recognition to Indian engineers.
  • IE (I) ECE Students’ Chapter was started in the year 2000 at Mepco Schlenk Engineering College. All the UG students of ECE department are members of IE (I) ECE Students’ Chapter.
  • The current membership strength is 414 students.

The services rendered by The Institution of Engineers (India) to its Members are primarily through a variety of technical activities and functions such as:

  • Dissemination and updating of engineering and technological knowledge and diffusion among its members, the information on all matters affecting engineering, through Technical Activities, such as seminars, symposia, continuing education courses, workshops, paper meetings, conventions, conferences, etc at both national and international levels.
  • Providing access to R & D activities and engineering practices through engineering and technological disciplines.
  • Highlighting emerging engineering and technological scenario through comprehensive coverage in the tabloid IEI News published monthly along with authoritative discourses and state-of-the-art reviews on specialized engineering issues in the Technorama published annually.

In order to create sharp focus in national priority areas, The Institution of Engineers (India) has established,

  • Engineering Staff College of India (ESCI), National Design and Research Forum (NDRF), Rural Development Forum (RDF), Water management forum (WMF), The sustainable Development Forum (SDF) and Safety and Quality Forum (SQF).

 IE(I) ECE students’ chapter was awarded the best students’ chapter award for conducting large number of activities by IE(I) Madurai local center on 25.10.2008
