Structural Engineering Laboratory serves a wide spectrum of activities covering those related to teaching, research, and consultancy. The primary activities include experimental studies on model  structural elements and assemblies under various static and dynamic loading conditions. With the available test area, state-of-the-art load-displacement-controlled equipment for load application, data acquisition and monitoring, the laboratory represents a distinctive facility for large and scaled investigation of the load-deformation behaviour of structures.

The Hydraulics Laboratory was established from the inception of Civil Engineering department. It contains a floor area of 190 sq.metres. The Laboratory is fully equipped with all necessary equipment along with their accessories, as required for B.E Civil and Mechanical Engineering courses in the syllabus. The Laboratory has been kept with pace of modern technological advancements by purchasing new equipment as and when required. The laboratory includes Flow measurement set-ups and Turbo Machines. The laboratory experiments include the study of open channel flow, closed conduit flow, pump and turbine characteristics which enhance the students to acquire thorough knowledge on the practical utility of these devices in the field.

 

The CADD centre provides a modern facility for instruction in a variety of computer software packages. The  Lab has equipped with more than 72 Computer Systems with high end latest Configuration hardware. The software available include STAAD Pro, REVIT Architecture, REVIT Structural, AutoCAD, Primavera, REVIT MEP and ANSYS 14, 3D Studio Max.

PG LABORATORY

PG laboratory is equipped with Civil 3D with AutoCAD, Primavera,  ANSYS, STAAD PRO,  SCAADS Design & Drafting Suite,  SCAADS Building Estimator,  STRAP,  STRUDS,  Mathcad,   AUTOCIVIL,  NISA & NISA-Civil and ADT 2.0

The strength of materials laboratory measuring an area of 191 sq.m. was established at the time of starting of Civil Engineering Department in the year 1985. This laboratory is fully equipped with all necessary machines with accessories for conducting lab. classes for the under-graduate courses in Civil and Mechanical Engineering. This laboratory has equipments and tools worth Rs.12.63 lakhs which include Universal Testing Machine of 1000 KN capacity and compression testing machine of 2000 KN capacity. Besides, there are number of other equipment like Hardness testing machines, Spring testing machine, Torsion testing machines, Sheet metal testing machine, Fatigue testing machine, Wood testing machine,  Impact testing machine, etc. available for the regular practical classes. Sophisticated equipments are being periodically purchased to modernize the laboratory and also to train the students. This laboratory is one of the premier laboratories for the purpose of Consultancy and Testing works. Almost all government agencies and private organizations in and around Sivakasi have access to this laboratory for consultancy / testing services.

The Geotechnical Engineering laboratory was established in 1985. The laboratory is equipped with all modern machineries required for advanced research and consultancy services. All the equipment’s mentioned in the syllabus content of the undergraduate programme can be carried out in the laboratory. The area of the laboratory is 19.1m x 10m = 191 m2. The total cost of the equipment’s around Rs.16.80 lakhs which includes Triaxial compression testing apparatus, Direct shear test apparatus and unconfined compression testing apparatus. Facilities to conduct field tests like Plate Load Test and Standard Penetration Test are available. 

The Environmental Engineering Laboratory is well equipped with Specialized instruments like Computer interfaced Spectrophotometer (Spectronic 20D+), Digital pH meter, Turbidity meter, Conductivity meter, BOD Incubator, Flame Photometer, High volume Air Sampler, Stack Monitoring Kit, Water Analysing Kit to meet the academic requirements of undergraduate programme and for full-fledged consultancy activities in the field of water quality analysis and air quality monitoring.

Highways laboratory was established in 1985 as Concrete and Highways Laboratory. Then, It was bifurcated as HIGHWAYS LAB in 2001 with facilities for testing the Bitumen, Tar and Aggregates. The Laboratory is fully equipped with all necessary equipments, as required for courses (B.E Civil Engineering) in the syllabus prescribed by the University.  The Laboratory has been kept with pace of modern technological advancements by purchasing new equipments as and when required. The major equipments available in the laboratory are Aggregate Impact tester, Los Angels Abrasion Testing machine, Deval abrasion testing machine, Aggregate crushing value apparatus, Standard penetrometer, Ring and Ball apparatus, Apparatus for adhesiveness test , Flash point and fire point apparatus, standard  tar viscometer, Ductility testing machine for bitumen, Marshall apparatus, Bitumen Centrifuge Extractor and Electronic Weighing Balance.

The Surveying Laboratory is equipped with the instruments and tools that students use throughout the surveying course. Students learn techniques for gathering field data with both traditional and modern instruments and demonstrate their proficiency on weekly lab exercises and a comprehensive mini project and final exam. Each lab group - typically four students - has a dedicated set of instruments to use, including auto level, theodolite, and total station. Each group also has levelling staffs, tripods, tape, chain and other common surveying tools. The lab also serves as office space for the surveying instructor and teaching assistants, so surveying students have direct access to help for material discussed in lecture and lab.In addition, students have opportunity to use total station, GPS, Digital level equipment which enables horizontal vertical and angular measurements in single operation.
