SPONSORED RESEARCH PROJECTS

DEVELOPMENT OF AUTOCLAVED FLY ASH BASED GEOPOLYMER CONCRETE FOR PRECAST AND PRESTRESSED STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS

Geopolymer concrete is a concrete without cement with replacing cement by industrial waste pozzolanicmaterials such as fly ash, rice husk ash etc. Strength is attained not by hydration process but by polymerization process. It is the green concrete with minimized carbon emotion, less global warming, more durable concrete than conventional cement concrete. In this AICTE sponsored project, attempts are made to utilize high calcium content ASTM class C type fly ash and rice husk ash and partially replacing low calcium content ASTM class F type fly ash.Further, work is in  progress for applying the geopolymer concrete concept in pre-stressing system.

AUTOCLAVE AERATED CONCRETE

Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) is a non-combustible, lime-based cementitious building material that is expanding into new worldwide markets. The prominent advantage of aerated concrete is its lightweight, which economizes the design of supporting structures and inherent properties that include thermal insulation, acoustical insulation, and excellent fire protection ratings. In this research specimens of AAC for varying mix propositions of fly ash, cement, lime, aluminum powder and silica fume / GGPS were tested for density and compressive strength. The maximum compressive strength attained was 5.36N/mm2 with density of 957 kg/m3.

MODERNIZATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY

This project gave the opportunity to establish the modern testing facilities to analyze the Water and Air in environmental engineering lab. Testing on ambient gases by gas sample analyzers was acquired in the project budget. The instrument AAS-7000 series was purchased under project gave a wide scope in heavy metal analysis in the water. The pollution level of water and gases can be analyzed by using above instruments. By this project the environmental engineering lab facilities have been enhanced in the field of water and air analyzing.

MODERNIZATION OF REMOTE SENSING AND GIS LABORATORY

This project gave the opportunity to establish the modern software facilities to establish and update the GIS lab. This lab has ARC GIS package and ENVI-Image processing software in addition to the top sheets and satellite imageries. By this project the GIS lab enhanced in the field of Geo special analysis of resources.

OPTIMAL RESERVOIR OPERATION RULES FOR PILAVAKKAL SCHEME (VAIPPAR BASIN TAMIL NADU) USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE BASED TECHNIQUES

The research project was proposed with an objective of developing optimal operation rules for pilavakkalscheme located in the Vaippar Basin of Virudhunagar District. The Objectives were achieved through application of Artificial Intelligence techniques like Neural Network, Genetic Programming and Genetic Algorithm. Based on the above techniques a user based Decision support system was developed and submitted to the PWD, virudhunagar for efficient operation of the above mentioned reservoir system.

Research works carried out:

Combined ANN and GP techniques for inflow prediction into a reservoir system with short and noisy time series data

FLY ASH TREATED BLACK COTTON SOIL BRICKS FOR VIRUDHUNAGAR DISTRICT

This project aimed at developing a technology for optimum mix of black cotton soil and fly ash with appropriate water content. Fly ash treated black cotton soil bricks was made using the block making machine with various proportions of fly ash and tested to arrive at the blocks with optimum strength.

THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES FOR JOINTS IN STRUCTURES

This project aimed at developing a model to analyze the T joints theoretically and verify the same using experimental procedure on the proto type made in steel. After repetitive tests, relationship between the variables were estimated and the model was built.

DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF IMPACT RESISTANCE STRUCTURES

Design and Analysis of Impact Resistance Structures was done by establishing the drop mass setup at structural engineering laboratory. The outcome of the study has a impact on accident vulnerability analysis of aircraft structures.

DYNAMIC TESTING FACILITIES FOR BLAST PRONE FIREWORKS INDUSTRIAL STRUCTURES IN THE RURAL TAMILNADU

Dynamic Testing Facilities for Blast Prone Fireworks Industrial Structures was setup in Structural Engg. Lab. It is capable of testing the prototypes of composite materials to test their capacity to with stand the dynamic load. It is the unique facility available in the structures laboratory sponsored by AICTE

ANALYSIS OF COLLAPSE MECHANISM OF THIN WALLED METALLIC SHELLS

Analysis of collapse mechanism of thin walled metallic shells used in fuselage construction of aircrafts. The outcomes are used in aircraft sheet metalling works and accident prevention due to impact reduction.

ESTABLISHMENT OF COMPUTER AIDED INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES

Establishment of Computer aided Instructional resources production centre (CAIRPC) was established with latest state of the art hardware and software. The CAIRPC was used to produce compact disc on computer aided teaching materials on various elements of Civil Engg. to focus on Structural Engg. This project has a commended status.
